What is Acupuncture?

Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points located on the surface of the skin, which have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions. Modern research shows that acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters that promote circulation and hormonal balance as well as reduce pain and inflammation.

Acupuncture not only eliminates or alleviates symptoms, it treats the underlying cause and improves the patient's quality of life. No two acupuncture treatments are alike. An individualized treatment plan will be formulated based on your unique needs by a certified professional at one of our 4 locations.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture improves the body’s functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites--commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or acupoints. This is done by stimulating select points on the skin by the insertion of hair thin, disposable stainless steel needles. Pressure, heat, or electrical stimulation may further enhance the effects. Other acupoint stimulation techniques include: manual massage, moxibustion or heat therapy, cupping, and the application of topical herbal medicines and linaments.

What are the Common Uses of Acupuncture?

Many patients seek acupuncture to ease stress and alleviate stress related conditions. Acupuncture has proven effective in not only relieving symptoms, but often in resolving emotional conditions permanently. It can help ease emotional discomfort as well as the physical symptoms surrounding the following:

Acupuncture

  • Back, shoulder and neck pain
  • Sciatica and headaches
  • Knee and hip pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tennis elbow, arthritis
  • Depression and stress
  • Sleep related issues
  • Fatigue and weight gain

Fertility, Pregnancy and Acupuncture

If you are struggling to conceive naturally, acupuncture can be of great benefit. Chinese Medicine and acupuncture can restore balance to your reproductive and endocrine system.Specifically, acupuncture can assist with increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs, improving uterine lining and egg quality, regulating menstruation and ovulation, helping with implantation by reducing uterine spasms, relieving stress and decreasing the body's stress response, and improving male factor infertility such as sperm count, motility and quality.

Pregnant women find relief from morning sickness and fatigue in the initial stages of pregnancy. In the second and third trimester, acupuncture can be used to treat acid reflux, high blood pressure, edema, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, back pain, and can assist in turning a breech baby.  If you think you are a candidate for acupuncture treatment for pregnancy or fertility related symptoms, please call (212) - 355 - 3377 today and make an appointment today.
